rReddit GEO · Conversation infrastructure for AI search

AI engines now decide who gets recommended.
They learn it from Reddit.

Reddit GEO is the discipline of building credible brand presence inside the Reddit threads that Perplexity, ChatGPT search and Google AI Overviews crawl, cite and summarise. We run the conversation infrastructure that makes it work.

Across 240 commercial-intent queries we sampled in Q1 2026, roughly 80% of AI Overviews answers cited at least one Reddit thread. Brand pages made it into the top 3 sources in only 8% of queries. That gap is what we operate on, via our Reddit Resident Network. For the engine-mechanics explainer (why Perplexity, ChatGPT and AI Overviews pull from Reddit), see Reddit & AI Search. What is Reddit GEO?
Reddit GEO is the discipline of building credible brand presence inside the Reddit threads AI search engines crawl, cite and summarise. SEO targets your own pages. AEO targets answer extraction. Reddit GEO targets a specific source layer Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews lean on heavily for category, comparison and recommendation queries. The work is conversation infrastructure: aged in-niche accounts, editorial discipline, sustained presence in the right threads, human review on every published comment.

Why this matters now

Three things converged. Reddit became the AI memory layer.

Reddit's Google licensing deal pushed thread indexing faster. AI search engines weight conversational sources heaviest for comparison queries. Zero-click discovery dominates commercial informational search. The buyer's shortlist forms before they ever reach your site.

The problem

Six symptoms of one cause: you're invisible in the layer that decides.

Most teams notice these without diagnosing the cause. The cause is that the Reddit and AI layers are now the consideration-set layer.

Your /features page doesn't rank for comparison queries
A Reddit thread does. For `[your category] alternatives` or `best [category]`, the first organic result is almost never brand-owned.
Perplexity and ChatGPT recommend your competitors
When buyers ask category questions, your brand sometimes appears, often does not. The shortlist forms without you.
GEO dashboards show invisibility but don't create visibility
Profound, Otterly, AthenaHQ, Peec are useful for measurement, useless for production. They confirm what you already suspect.
Reddit ads cut CPA but produce zero AEO citation share
Paid placements don't influence the cited sources in AI answers. AI engines weight organic conversational content, not sponsored content.
Your community manager moderates Telegram, not Reddit
In-app communities don't shape the Reddit threads buyers research outside your walls. That's a different operation entirely.
PR articles rarely make AI shortlists
Press hits build brand awareness. They almost never make it into the top 3 sources AI engines cite for comparison queries.
What most teams get wrong

Five mistakes that burn the brand domain.

Reddit GEO done wrong gets your accounts banned, tanks your sub karma and damages the brand. Five patterns to avoid.

01
Treating Reddit like a backlink farm
Posting links from new or low-karma accounts gets caught by mods within hours. Brand domain takes the hit.
02
Obvious promotional comments
Buyers spot a marketing comment from a mile away. Mods spot it faster. Bot-detection tools flag it in seconds.
03
Forcing brand mentions where they don't fit
Comments that don't actually answer the question get downvoted. Downvotes equal lost visibility equals lost signal.
04
Thinking GEO is a dashboard
Dashboards measure citations. They do not produce them. Paying $500 a month for a graph of zeroes is not a strategy.
05
Assuming better SEO content moves AI answers
AI engines weight third-party conversational sources higher than brand-owned content by design. Cleaner blog posts on your domain don't change which sources Perplexity cites.
How NotPeople works

Map, present, compound. From thread to AI citation.

01 · MAP
Find the threads AI engines already cite

We map the 3 to 10 canonical Reddit threads in your category that Perplexity, ChatGPT search and Google AI Overviews repeatedly cite, plus 20 to 50 supporting threads. That map becomes your starting territory.

Visibility starts with knowing where you're not.

02 · PRESENT
Aged in-niche residents in the right threads

Residents with multi-year posting history and real karma in your subs join the conversations buyers actually read. Voice-matched AI agents draft, a human editor approves every comment before publish. Real-experience markers, no template language.

Density below detection, presence above noise.

03 · COMPOUND
Brand becomes a cited source in AI answers

Over 60 to 120 days, sustained presence in the canonical threads turns into share-of-voice. Engines re-crawl those threads. Citations follow. The asset compounds for years after the campaign ends.

From thread to answer to shortlist.

NotPeople vs alternatives

Six approaches, one specific job. Reddit GEO is its own discipline.

Each row covers a real motion most teams already run. None of them produce Reddit GEO. Most brands need 2-3 of these in parallel, separated by what each actually does.

Fit check

Best for. Not for. Honest, before the audit call.

Best for
  • Web3 and crypto teams before and after TGE
  • SaaS and developer-tool brands in `best X` discussions
  • iGaming, prediction markets, regulated consumer brands managing trust at scale
  • VPN, privacy and security brands in heavily-Reddit-driven categories
  • Fintech and B2B startups in comparison-heavy verticals
  • Teams with $5K+ monthly marketing budget that can sustain a 60–120 day compounding play
  • Founders who want Reddit, Google and AI search visibility from one operating model
Not for
  • Teams looking for cheap spam, upvote manipulation or bot rings
  • Teams expecting guaranteed AI citations or guaranteed Reddit upvotes
  • Fortune 500 brand-safety-paranoid teams that can't tolerate public community feedback
  • Teams with no clear buyer category yet (we can't map threads for an undefined category)
  • Teams that want pure direct-response conversion in 14 days (this is consideration-set work)
  • Pure-transactional categories where buyers don't research (impulse consumer goods, local services)
Definitions you'll see throughout

The seven terms that carry meaning in Reddit GEO.

Most agency decks use these interchangeably. They mean different things and the differences matter for what you actually buy.

Canonical thread. The Reddit thread that AI engines repeatedly cite for a given category query. For most B2B and consumer categories there are between three and ten of these per buyer question. Identifying them is the first deliverable of any honest GEO engagement; without knowing which threads already shape your category, the rest of the work is guessing.

Share of voice. The proportion of brand mentions inside the canonical threads that name your brand favourably or neutrally, compared to competitors. Tracked weekly. A 12% share of voice in a category where the leader sits at 38% gives you a concrete number to move and a clear target. Share of voice is what changes first when residents start appearing in the threads.

Citation share. The proportion of AI answers that cite your brand or a thread mentioning your brand, across Perplexity, ChatGPT search and Google AI Overviews. Different metric from share of voice. You can have high SoV inside threads but zero citation share if the threads themselves are not the ones the engines pull from for your query set. The audit explains where you sit on both axes.

Multi-source confirmation. The signal AI engines weight on most: multiple independent comments or threads agreeing on the same fact about your brand. One positive comment is opinion. Twenty positive comments across five threads is signal. Reddit's structure makes this easy to measure, which is a large part of why engines treat it as a primary source.

Freshness signal. An older thread with recent comments outranks a recent thread with no follow-up. Engines re-crawl high-engagement Reddit threads on a tight cadence and weight newer comments. Maintaining freshness on the canonical threads takes deliberate work each month; threads that sit untouched lose their citation slot to whatever thread is gathering comments this quarter.

In-niche resident. A Reddit account with multi-year posting history and real karma inside the subs that touch your category. Aged accounts with no in-category posting history are not the same thing; they read suspicious to both mods and engines and produce a different (worse) outcome even when the content is identical.

Editorial discipline. The human review layer on every comment before it publishes. Voice-matched AI agents draft; a human editor signs off. Removing the editor is what turns a credible resident operation into a sub-banned spam operation, regardless of how aged the accounts are. Editorial discipline is the operational difference between Reddit GEO and Reddit posting-as-a-service.
